Art.Intelligence

Collaborative creation for the conference

Poster sessions at conferences are great opportunities to showcase your work to your peers but wouldn’t it be nice to also share something of your inner life with other attendees?

In keeping with the theme for the ASCILITE 2026 conference – The Future is Connection: Collaboration, Creativity and Compassion in a Digital Society – we invite you to unleash your creativity.  Art.Intelligence celebrates the creative humanity of ASCILITE 2026 conference participants and encourages connection through sharing our thinking through artworks.  This opportunity is for contributors to depict a personal response to the theme of About AI without AI with hand-made artworks that will be displayed alongside the usual conference posters, to spark your curiosity and conversation. There are no prizes and no judgement, just fun and a chance to reconnect with making something by hand.  Use whatever media and type of art you like (drawing, painting, printing, papier mâché, textiles, collage, re-used and found objects, etc), as long as it’s not digital art or GenAI.

Types of Work

The type of work and materials are open to interpretation by the contributors. Here are some suggestions:

  • Draw or paint
  • Paper collage – using magazines and free postcards
  • Last-conference-poster origami
  • Papier-mâché a tiny AI companion
  • Upcycle and reuse

FAQ

Can I use GenAI or digital tools to make my depiction?

Digital art is different from analogue art, as it involves a relationship between the creator and the computer where the artist ideates and uses techniques and the computer serves as brush, canvas and palette. Restricting submissions to handmade art encourages participants to reconnect with purely physical processes. We include collage and mixed media in the handmade category, and recognise the potential ambiguity in this, but we would assert that these methods still work with physical assets.

Where will the artworks be displayed?

The artworks will be displayed on poster boards alongside the conventional poster gallery for the duration of the conference.

What size can the work be?

The works can be in any medium but not digital art or GenAI art. The finished works will need to fit easily in a 210 x 297 mm (A4) display space (landscape or portrait) vertically on a poster display board.

Registration

To assist with logistics, please register your interest by early November. That will help the logistics. (You don’t have to 100% commit to what the final work will be, just let us know that you plan to be part of this exhibition).
